The Friendship Agreement
The Friendship Agreement, which formalises the unique link between
Sunderland and Washington DC was signed on 20 June 2006 with the
previous Mayor of Washington DC, Anthony Williams. Under the Agreement,
the two cities will co-operate and exchange ideas and information
in a number of key areas. These include economic development and
tourism promotion, ICT and eGovernment initiatives to increase social
inclusion and citizen participation, and cultural and educational
programmes to improve the quality of life of residents of both cities.
The two cities will also co-operate and exchange information related
to the historical ties, which date back to 1183.
Work is being co-ordinated by a Steering Committee in both cities.
In Sunderland, this brings together Sunderland Partnership, City
Council, and local business representatives together with regional
partners including the National Trust and Regional Development Agency.
The Steering Committee in Washington DC includes representatives
from the Mayor’s Office, DC Public Schools, British American Business
Association, and Local Universities.
